Central Iowa Trail from Ankeny to Woodward

Help us cross the last bridge!

This page was updated December 22, 2008.

About $200,000 left to raise by summer 2009 to complete the Ankeny to Woodward trail and bridge by 2010! This is a $14.7 million project — and 98% of the funds are raised.

THANKS to more than 760 donors, we have met the matching requirement for the $1.75 million Vision Iowa grant! This means we can start bridge construction this winter.

In addition, Prairie Meadows announced a major Legacy Grant for the trail project on Dec. 17!

Thanks also to strong partners, including the 5 trail communities, 4 trail counties and INHF, who have brought the project this far over six years.

Help create a premier destination trail

These 25 miles are critical to connect two 100-mile trail loops planned for Central Iowa Trail Network, an attraction that's unique in the Midwest. This trail also features:

- One of the largest trail bridges in the world: 1/2-mile-long, rising 130 feet over the scenic Des Moines River valley.

- Connections to the Heart of Iowa Trail, Neal Smith Trail & 4 Mile Creek Trail through the communities of Ankeny, Sheldahl, Slater, Madrid and Woodward in Polk, Story, Boone, and Dallas counties (see map).

- Easily access to nearly 1 million people with free and easy fitness opportunities.

- Great new asset for economic development and our quality of life.

NEW! News release to announce that match is secure for Vision Iowa grant.

A 1/2-mile long, 130-foot tall bridge spanning the Des Moines River valley highlights the trail between Woodward and Madrid. Though the original railroad bridge piers remain, new decking must be installed.
