Big Blue Sky |
Big Blue Sky started in the mid-1990s as the father-son duo of Jon Stravers Sr. and Jon-Jon Stravers. The band’s unique hybrid style includes the influences of folk, bluegrass, blues and reggae.
Since Jon-Jon’s death in an auto accident in 2007, the band and its many friends have performed around the Midwest in his honor.
Through their music, the group seeks a closer connection to the planet. Jon Stravers says their creative musical writing stems from the inspiration of wild places. It’s a celebration of our natural heritage and the natural rhythms of life. Stravers has said one of his important early influences was the late Gladys Black, a Marion County native known as Iowa's "bird lady."
Living out their deep connection to nature, Big Blue Sky performs regularly on the Mississippi River onboard Mississippi Explorer Cruises and at other river-related events. They play intimate venues like coffee houses and opera houses across the region, as well as various cultural events.![]() |
