Future conservationists receive scholarships

This article appeared in the Fall 2005 edition of INHF's magazine.

Carl Kurtz
The late Gladys Black was an avid birder from Marion. INHF raised funds to honor her with the Gladys Black Blad Eagle Refuge (inset) and a scholarship fund.
Naomi Yang of Pella and Chris Dunkin of Knoxville, selected as the first Gladys Black Scholarship recipients, have set off for careers in conservation.

The Gladys Black Scholarship Fund was created to memorialize Gladys Black, a Marion County bird expert and author, and to launch her county’s next generation of conservationists and naturalists. While raising funds to purchase the Gladys Black Bald Eagle Refuge, INHF directed additional funds to our endowment for establishing this scholarship.

Naomi, daughter of Maivang Yang, attended Pella High School.  She was accepted at Metropolitan State University in Saint Paul, Minnesota, where she intends to major in biology.

Chris, son of Chris and Melinda Dunkin, attended Knoxville High School.  He began his course of study this fall in natural resource management at Iowa State University.

The Red Rock Environmental Education Foundation is INHF’s local partner in administering this scholarship. Learn more about Gladys, her refuge and her scholarship at www.inhf.org/gladysblack.htm
