Stories to Inspire

This article first appeared in INHF's Spring 2008 magazine.

“We hope these stories inspire you to consider what story you want your land — or life — to share with those who follow.”

– Neil Hamilton

Welcome to our “year in review” issue. As chair of INHF’s board, it is my pleasure to thank you for supporting our organization.

This issue is an opportunity to catch our breath and consider the range of projects INHF completed in 2007. When you read what our members are doing to protect the natural heritage of Iowa, you can’t help being impressed by the diversity of resources and depth of commitment.

This edition’s theme is “Every Acre Has a Story.” Collectively, these stories reveal the promise and possibilities of our work. We hope they inspire you to consider what story you want your land — or life — to share with those who follow.

One of the first exciting stories of 2008, involves reaching the milestone of protecting our 100,000th acre. This addition to Stone State Park in Woodbury County was made possible by a bequest from Millie Acklin. To highlight INHF’s commitment to the people of Iowa, we donated the land to the state in her honor. But the gift doesn’t just recognize our past. More importantly, it reflects our promise to do more in years ahead.

To bring even more focus and energy to our work, the Foundation launched the Campaign for The Bluffs, The Hills, The Lakes. This five-year effort will raise $40 million dollars from public and private sources to protect 15,000 acres of the state’s most critical resources. The initiative is generating considerable excitement and contributions, showing Iowans share our love and concern for these lands. But don’t worry! The campaign will not stop our efforts in other regions. The board and staff of INHF are committed to working with landowners and officials in every corner and every county of Iowa.
