All Creatures Great and Small

back to all stories

This article first appeared in INHF's Spring 2008 magazine.

An anonymous couple from central Iowa made a tremendous million-dollar gift for Iowa wildlife in 2007. Giving through their trust they named Alma Natura — approximately translated as nurturing nature — they are boosting three important efforts to benefit wildlife habitat.

About half the gift kicked off our Campaign for The Bluffs, The Hills, The Lakes (see related article) in grand style. Their strong interest in wildlife habitat protection fits hand in glove with the campaign’s goal of protecting priority wildlife habitat in key regions of Iowa.

Another portion will boost our land protection projects within state-designated Bird Conservation Areas (BCA) and Amphibian and Reptile Conservation Areas (ARCA) throughout Iowa.

Lastly, they created a special internship fund within the INHF endowment. Each summer a college student will be given the opportunity to help restore and protect wildlife habitat through the Foundation’s land management activities.

By protecting wildlife habitat in each of these ways, Alma Natura not only calls attention to the circular nature of life but also energizes that cycle — nurturing nature so that nature can continue to nurture all life.
