Erwin Klaas won the Hagie Heritage Award for 2008. Learn more.

The Hagie Heritage Award is given annually to a person who works to improve the quality of Iowa’s natural environment and encourages others to do the same. This year’s outstanding crop of nominees is making the selection committee’s job especially tough.

The nominees are Roland Bernau of Algona, for preserving a large native prairie in Kossuth County; Susan Heathcote of Des Moines, for her professional and volunteer work to protect water quality in Iowa; Roslea Johnson of Des Moines, for leading prairie conservation and restoration efforts in Madison County; Erwin Klaas of Ames, for his wide-ranging conservation endeavors and dedication to civic education; and Jimmie Thompson of Ames, for locating and documenting plant species in central Iowa.

The recipient, being determined at press-time, will be awarded $1,000 and a hand-carved acorn sculpture.
