INHF selects new interns for summer 2004

Since its inception in 1986, the Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation (INHF) internship program has had 128 interns, and this summer, seven new students will be added to that list. These Iowa college students have been selected to intern in various positions, including communications and land restoration in order to learn more about their fields of interest while helping to preserve Iowa's natural environment.

"These summer interns increase INHF's staff by 50%, so that means a huge increase in what we can accomplish for Iowa's natural resources," said Cathy Engstrom, INHF communications director. "We also appreciate all their energy and enthusiasm."

Ryan Marquardt, another intern, was hired in the spring of 2004 and will continue his work through the year. Marquardt's responsibilities include grant writing, researching and project support.

The INHF Buckmaster Internship Program receives its funding from the R.J. McElroy Trust of Waterloo and is named in honor of Robert J. Buckmaster, who served as the Trust's chair from 1979-82, and was also the first chair of the Foundation's board. More funding comes from the Svare family trust fund in Iowa City.

Here are the summer 2004 INHF interns!

Back row: Heidi Von Arb, Clint Maddix, Grant Baker, Kelly Rohder, Ryan Marquardt.
Front: Michael Blazing, Chuck McLaughlin (board member), Christina McFall, Jessica James.

Grant Baker of Orange City, IA, is a senior in communications studies at Northwestern College. His duties include designing the INHF calendar, website, brochures and other related communications projects.

Michael Blazing of Racine, MN, is a sophomore majoring in landscape architecture at Iowa State University. He is one of four land interns that work to restore native prairies, which involves exotic plant removal and collecting seeds.

Jessica James of Boone, IA, is a senior majoring in forestry at Iowa State University. As a land intern, James' duties primarily involve prairie restoration, as well as its maintenance through clearing brush and replanting.

Clint Maddix of Van Buren County, IA, is a senior majoring in life science and conservation management at Upper Iowa University. His land internship duties often require him to travel across the state looking at damaged land and working with invasive species.

Christina McFall of Roland, IA, is a sophomore majoring in religious studies at Grinnell College. Her land internship duties involve restoring native prairies, removing invasive species and land maintenance.

Kelly Rohder of Plainfield, IL, is a senior with a double major in journalism and English at the University of Iowa. Her duties as a communications intern involve writing press releases and magazine articles, helping to promote 25th anniversary events, maintaining the clips database and completing other communications projects.

Heidi Von Arb of Alton, IA, is a senior majoring in landscape architecture at Iowa State University. As a land intern, she will assist in prairie restoration and maintenance, including exotic plant removal, clearing brush, collecting seeds, and replanting.

Ely Grote, a Drake University agricultural law student, is helping INHF research property titles and public transportation mitigation policies. His work is funded by Drake's Agricultural Law Center's Service Learning Summer Legal Internships program.
