INHF expands Upper Iowa River protection

The Summer 2004 issue of this magazine explained how INHF had recently protected sites along two key bends of the Upper Iowa River. Since then, local landowners David and Jane Jensen sold the missing puzzle piece in one of those bends to the Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation at a bargain sale price.

The 27-acre parcel contains a half-mile of river frontage. With roadway access to some of the most majestic views of the Chimney Rocks and the Upper Iowa River, it could have been a prime target for development. By taking ownership, INHF will protect the site's scenic and habitat values. INHF plans to eventually transfer the property to public ownership.

"This property is a very important piece added to an already important project," said Joe McGovern, INHF Land Stewardship Program Director. "While we continue to look for new parcels in this area, this acquisition is a big step in our ongoing protection along the Upper Iowa River. Of course, protecting the area is a lot easier with supportive landowners like the Jensens."
