The story behind this place                                   Photo by Jim Riggs
With its ancient white pine, white-barked birch trees and rare ferns, Pine Lake State Park is one of the great natural areas along the Iowa River Greenbelt of Hardin County. It was one of the first state parks in Iowa (created in 1920). INHF recently added 69 acres to this 585-acre park, and we helped create the Tower Rock Trail that connects the park to the nearby community of Steamboat Rock.

Pine Lake State Park is part of the Iowa River Greenbelt, which offers a surprising concentration of wooded valleys, spectacular views, and diverse wildlife habitats tucked in the midst of fertile farmland. INHF helped Hardin County citizens designate and plan for this 42-mile greenbelt region in the 1980s, and we've since protected more than 600 acres of important wild places in the greenbelt. Because of its natural beauty and its array of recreational opportunities, we've included the Iowa River Greenbelt as a Featured Destination on our website.
