Congress approves new
IRA donation options

This article was written and posted on INHF's website in October of 2006.

In addition to improving tax benefits for easement donations, the Pension Protection Act of 2006 allows people to make tax-free donations from their individual retirement accounts.

Here are some of the provision's special considerations:

  • You must be 70-1/2 years old or older.
  • You can give no more than $100,000 annually from your IRAs in 2006 and 2007.
  • Only certain types of charities are eligible.
  • Though you avoid taxes normally paid on a personal withdrawal, you cannot claim a tax deduction for this gift.

IRA donations can be a convenient way to help INHF and your other favorite charities–while offering unique tax savings. Talk with your financial advisor to see if it's a good fit for you.
