How will we be remembered?

This article first appeared in INHF's Fall 2006 magazine.

“Because we don’t think about future generations,
they will never forget us.” —Henrik Tikkanen

Reading the morning newspaper, it’s easy to despair about the financial and ecological debts we’re leaving for our children and grandchildren.

Luckily, I then get to come to work—where I meet inspiring Iowans who not only think about future generations but who take extraordinary actions to improve the world they will inherit.

As you read this magazine, you’ll meet a few of them as well:

  • Friends who have devoted their lives to restoring Iowa’s native prairie—and taken legal steps to protect those efforts beyond their lifetimes

  • A couple who are devoting their retirement to restoring the land they love—for their children, grandchildren and beyond

  • A teacher who has inspired countless students to know and love nature

  • An Iowan who lived part of history in the Civilian Conservation Corps—an innovative public program that left visible legacies throughout our state

These people—and all our members—exemplify the Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation’s slogan and mission: “for those who follow.” Our work is all about protecting and restoring diversity and balance to Iowa’s landscape—a powerful way to remember future generations.

Working together, let’s help them remember us more fondly!
