Information
and
research available
at the Iowa Lakeside
Laboratory
This document is a bibliography of some
of the research found in the Gazetteer at the Iowa Lakeside Laboratory.
It includes professional research papers, masters thesis, class
projects and inventories and miscellaneous publications such as
pamphlets and anecdotal information.
There are several current and historical
maps and aerial photos stored in the library of Lakeside Lab.
Most of the historical maps are from the 1930's and could be helpful
in restoration projects.
Records of bird bandings done in conjunction
with the Lakeside Lab can be found in the Gazetteer.
An extensive file system is kept on all
of the research conducted in Dickinson County (and surrounding
areas) through the LL. Most of this research is conducted on public
lands. Sites include those linked below.
More extensive information can be found
on Cayler Prairie, West and East Lake Okoboji, Silver Lake Fen,
Freda Haffner Kettlehole, Iowa Lakeside Laboratory grounds and
the Okoboji region in general.
The contents of the Gazetteer can be
viewed by contacting the Lakeside Laboratory resident managers
Mark and Judy Wehrspann at (712) 337-3669.

Iowa Great Lakes Region
by G.H. Crum and R. W. Bachmann
Iowa State Journal of Research, November 1973, Vol. 48, No.
2, pp. 147-173
Distribution and relative
abundance data of submersed aquatic macrophytes were collected
from West Okoboji, Big Spirit, East Okoboji, Upper Gar, Minnewashta
and Lower Gar and were compared with earlier investigations and
collections. Species composition has remained relatively stable
in West Okoboji and Big Spirit. In East Okoboji, Upper Gar, Minnewashta
and Lower Gar, species composition had been reduced. A direct
relationship between secchi disc transparency and submersed macrophytes,
but and inverse relationship exists between planktonic blue-green
algae and submersed macrophytes.
