Central Iowa trail from Ankeny to Woodward
will be "High Trestle Trail"

This page was updated May 18, 2009.

Progress is on track to complete the Ankeny to Woodward trail and bridge in 2010.

NEW! Trail partners approve new trail identity as bridge construction proceeds. Read the news release.

View of bridge pilings in Des Moines River valley
A 1/2-mile long, 130-foot tall bridge spanning the Des Moines River valley will complete the the trail from Ankeny to Woodward. Though the original railroad bridge piers remain, new decking must be installed.

The project partners have approved the bid for construction on the scenic bridge.

We're grateful to more than 800 donors and to the major public grants that have brought this $14.7 million project to life.

Thanks also to strong partners, including the five trail communities, four trail counties and INHF, who have worked consistently together on this project for over six years.

We are creating a premier destination trail

These 25 miles are critical to connect two 100-mile trail loops planned for the Central Iowa Trail Network, an attraction that's unique in the Midwest. This trail also features:

- One of the largest trail bridges in the world: 1/2-mile-long, rising 130 feet over the scenic Des Moines River valley.

- Connections to the Heart of Iowa Trail, Neal Smith Trail & 4-Mile Creek Greenway Trail through the communities of Ankeny, Sheldahl, Slater, Madrid and Woodward in Polk, Story, Boone and Dallas counties (see map).

- Great new asset for economic development and our quality of life.

- Easily accessable by nearly 1 million people with free and easy fitness opportunities.
