The program support intern plays a vital role at INHF by writing grants that provide funding for land conservation and other INHF projects.
The program support intern’s main focus is researching and writing grant proposals to fund land protection. He or she may also write posts for the INHF blog, visit INHF properties and provide other general program support. There is a certain degree of flexibility outside the internship’s grant writing core, and we encourage candidates to make the position their own. This internship introduces interns to many leading members of Iowa's conservation community.
Program support interns have helped write successful grants for additions to Waterman Prairie Complex and the protection of the Loess Hills, Upper Iowa River and Wabash Trace Nature Trail. Interns have also assisted with planning INHF events and have written for the INHF blog.
The program support intern must have very strong writing skills and be comfortable working independently. In the past, we've hired English majors (especially those with grant-writing experience) with environmental interest and students from environmental and planning fields who have strong communication skills. Both undergraduate and graduate students may apply. Applicants must submit writing samples, published or unpublished.
This position is full time in the summer, beginning in May and ending in August. This is a paid position at a rate of $10/hour.
Program support interns work in our downtown Des Moines office and must provide their own transportation to/from work. INHF encourages interns to discover active and mass transit options while in the Des Moines metro area (DART system, biking and carpooling).
To apply, please send Lisa Hein, Senior Director for Conservation Programs, the following:
- A cover letter outlining your qualifications and why you want this position
- 1-3 writing samples (both published samples and classroom work are accepted)
- Your college transcripts (official or unofficial)
- Two letters of recommendation, with at least one being written by a professor in your major. The letters may be included in your application or sent separately by the writer. Include reference contact information.
