Five Facts About Bison

The American Bison was once one of the most populous animals in North America. Though today there are only roughly 200,000 roaming the Great Plains.

But we bet you didn’t know that bison have made a reappearance in places like the Loess Hills and on the DeCook family’s ranch!

Did you know…

  1. Bison are the heaviest land mammals in North America.
  2. If frightened or provoked, bison can run up to 40 miles per hour.
  3. In the wild bison have a life span of between 12 and 20 years.
  4. Bison’s fur coats are so thick that snow can settle on their backs without melting.
  5. Though they have poor eyesight, bison have a very keen sense of smell.
