Nature Walk: Canada wildrye

Canada Wildrye-Rime Ice

One might wonder if Canada wildrye would be good food for hungry reindeer. It is a cool-season grass related to the cereal grains wheat, rye and barley and found over most of North America except for Alaska, Greenland and parts of the sub-arctic. It is short, but nutritious and good for grazing even in the dead of winter.

What other winter grasses do you love to see on chilly hikes?
