Eagle Nest Diaries

Brrr
The weather required wind-proof and snow-proof parkas at times . Need I say more?
At least the wind continued to provide us the opportunity to again witness the eagles soar effortlessly. And it is still incredibly breathtaking.
Show Off
The babies continue to grow and the incoming feathers are becoming more visible and numerous. One of the babies has more feather development than the other. They continue to tussle with each other occasionally, but it does not seem to be very serious.
The wing flapping exercises are occurring more frequently, but there is still a lot of progress to be made on the coordination! They still spend a majority of their time sleeping. Growing that quickly must be very exhausting!
The parents did not spend much time on the nest, but at least one of them was always close by. The female did try to cover the young during one of the winter squalls that blew through. The strong wind was blowing hard little snow pellets in horizontal sheets and it was difficult to even see the nest. However, we could see that the big babies had managed to stick their heads underneath mom to pretend they were out of the cold. Mom just half sat/squatted there and looked around like the weather was beautiful. What a great attitude to have!
Big Catch
Fishing seemed to be good last weekend - and we aren't talkin' little minnow sized fish! On a couple of different occasions, the fish were of the size that most fisherpeople would brag about (if they were into Suckers)! In the one picture, you can see how large the crops are on the babies - they are definitely well fed!

I went up to nest and an eagle parent--looked like mama--was feeding them. Their bodies look about same size as adult but very dark. I could only see one body as other was behind limb. I never did see their heads as mama was in way but they sure looked big! The leaves were very intrusive in our field of view. Maybe that was because the wind was blowing leaves over too much, but it's but very leafy all around now.
May 30
I observed the nest for a while today, and both babies are doing fine. They look to be fully feathered. If a slight breeze would blow, they'd exercise their wings with rather awkward wing-flapping. It's a wonder they don't knock each other off the nest as their wingspan looks pretty impressive! Otherwise they just stand on edge of nest and look around. The sun was hot and very little breeze today, so they had their beaks open. I didn't see or hear any adults, but the babies weren't crying so apparently they weren't hungry.
