Biscuitroof Bluff Prairie Walk

Join the Iowa Prairie Network for a prairie walk in Fremont County’s Loess Hills.

This walk will explore one of the state’s newest Wildlife Management Areas, Biscuitroot Bluff.

Offering panoramic views of the Loess Hills and Missouri River valley, Biscuitroot Bluff features the unique ‘peak and saddle’ topography of the loess deposits that developed thousands of years ago. It is located within the Waubonsie Special Landscape Area in the southwest corner of Iowa, which now includes more than 2,000 acres of protected land. Biscuitroot Bluff  was sold to Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation by private landowner Rosie Hall in 2015, and is now managed by Iowa Department of Natural Resources.

Biscuitroot Bluff contains State Endangered Species biscuitroot and two other plants listed as state Special Concern Species. Biscuitroot is very rare and only known to grow in a few places in the state. This Prairie Walk will be an excellent opportunity to see the plant. Iowa DNR Wildlife Biologist Matt Dollison will join us to help answer questions about the property.

The prairie walk is free and open to the public.

Biscuitroot Bluff is located about 3.5 miles south of Thurman, Iowa along Bluff Road/County Highway L44 near 242nd Avenue.
