Is there an equestrian trail that is part of the High Trestle Trail?
Equestrians will not be allowed on the bridge over the Des Moines River. However, horses are allowed on the section of the trail from Slater to Woodward — on the grassed surface adjacent to the paved trail. They are also allowed on the Heart of Iowa Nature Trail from Slater to Collins and Rhodes to Melbourne — equestrians must use the grassed trail and stay off of the paved surface.
There has been discussion of developing a bridle trail on the land under the big bridge but this would be a long-term project, as the land is owned by multiple entities and so would take a lot of coordination. For more details about trail use in a certain area, contact the appropriate county conservation board. The High Trestle Trail map (PDF format).
