Gladys Black Bald Eagle Refuge is dedicated

Note: This article was first published in the Summer 2004 edition of INHF's quarterly magazine.

Nearly 500 of our members contributed to establish an eagle refuge at Lake Red Rock and a college scholarship, both honoring ornithologist Gladys Black. Eleanor Coster and her family, previous landowners, sold the site to INHF in 2003 at a bargain price to ensure its protection.

On July 20, the completion of the project was celebrated at Horn's Ferry Bridge, a popular eagle viewing area that overlooks the new refuge. The refuge is used not only by Bald Eagles wintering in Iowa, but also numerous migratory songbirds and other species.
