INHF wins Governor's
Iowa Environmental
Excellence Award

This article was written and posted on INHF's website in December 2000.

INHF was honored to receive the first-ever Governor's Iowa Environmental Excellence Award at a special ceremony on December 15. The Foundation won in the Service/Nonprofit category.

The award ceremony was part of the finale event for Iowa EarthYear 2000, sponsored by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources. INHF was honored for its work in protecting Iowa's natural land, helping organize several Clean Water Alliances, establishing hundreds of trail miles, providing education to private landowners and more.

"As I listened to the achievements of all the Environmental Excellence Awards, I was struck at how many Iowans-from students to business owners-are working to protect this state's natural resources," said Mark Ackelson, INHF president. "Being listed among them is a great honor."

Winners in the other award categories are the Cedar Rapids Student-Built House, Glenwood Resource Center, Motorola and Waverly Light and Power. Two science teachers, William Desmarais of Washinton High School in Cedar Rapids and Hector Ibarra of West Branch Middle School won individual leadership awards. Special recognition was given to several groups in the following categories: water quality, waste management and energy efficiency/renewable energy.

The Foundation was nominated for this award by the Des Moines Area Community College.
