Trail description:
Whether you are hiking or biking, sightseeing or skiing, The Charley Western Recreational Trailway in Charles City has something to offer!
The Charley Western Recreational Trailway runs approximately 5.2 miles through and around Charles City. The first sections of the trail were constructed along the Cedar River between 1995 and 1999. This portion of the trail, along with another section which was added in 2006, is called the Riverside Trail. Public Art sculptures called "Seats Along the Cedar” can be seen along this section; these works of art were designed to be pieces that people can sit on. The Charley Western section of the trail contains the portion of the trail that was converted from the former Charley Western Railroad which was constructed in 1910. This section runs along the edge of town and crosses the Cedar River on an old railroad bridge. The Friends Garden Trailhead on Highway 14 is a well maintained garden area the perfect place for a break complete with beautiful flowers and benches. Every July 4th the trail hosts the annual Firecracker Five 5k/5mile race which draws over one hundred people from Charles City and areas beyond.
Supporters of the Trail is a group that has been established to provide for maintenance and future development of the Trailway. For more information, contact Community Revitalization at 641-228-2335 or www.charlescitychamber.com.
