Trail description:

This city greenbelt trail winds its way along Walnut Creek, through scenic, heavily wooded areas. Along the trail, markers identify trees, shrubs and wildflowers. About 10 acres of reconstructed prairie lie along the trail west of the Maddox Parkway trailhead.

The trail also links many parks and recreation areas. The Campbell Recreation Area contains softball fields, concessions, picnic areas, restrooms, tennis courts and a large playground with handicap-accessible play equipment. Another playground is located at the Greenbelt Park shelter at Maddox Parkway.

Though much of this trail has a rural feel, a few sections use streets or sidewalks. They include the section leading to Linnan Park, the segment between Country Club Boulevard and NW 142nd Street, and the section that runs along Harbach Boulevard to College Road.

The Clive Greenbelt Trail now includes an extension that links it to the 57-mile Raccoon River Valley Trail. By 73rd Street, the Clive trail enters a shopping district. There it connects with the Windsor Heights trail system, which then connects to the Urbandale system. Other planned extensions will link the Clive Greenbelt Trail to the Jordan Creek Trail, the Bill Riley Trail and other Des Moines metro trails.
