"Can I get paid for my easement?"
While some states provide public funding for purchasing conservation easements, Iowa currently offers little or no state funding for this purpose.
A few federal programs—such as the Wetlands Reserve Program and other farm programs—offer easement payments, but these programs have become very competitive. As currently administered, paid easement programs apply to only very specific circumstances, require multiple years to complete and/or require large financial matches from the landowner.
As a result, most conservation easements in Iowa are now donated, though you’re welcome to ask about payment options or explore them on your own. For the most part, Iowa easement donors receive their reward from income tax benefits—and intangible benefits like peace of mind about their land’s future.
