Bruce Mountain, the
Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation's Director of Land Projects,
has been named WHO Radio's Sportsman of the Year, an award co-presented
by the Des Moines chapter of the Izaak Walton League.
"The judges were really amazed at all the contributions to
the great outdoors that Bruce has made," said Keith Kirkpatrick,
host of WHO's Sportsman's Notebook program.
At INHF, Mountain has worked on the acquisition and protection
of more than 20,000 acres of natural lands throughout the state--especially
wetlands and their associated uplands.
Mountain is also an active member and volunteer with many other
conservation groups. He is the past chairman of the Mid-Iowa Chapter
of Ducks Unlimited and Zone chairman for central Iowa. He is a
life sponsor of Pheasants Forever and has served as a board member
of their Iowa Capitol Chapter for the past four years. He has
served as general counsel for the Iowa Turkey Federation. Meanwhile,
he is restoring 75 acres of prairie on his own farm in Warren
County.
"It's nice being recognized for something you've done, but
it's even better to be recognized for something you love to do,"
said Mountain.
Mountain received his award this month during an Izaak Walton
League meeting. James P. Bell of Iowa City received a similar
award for his habitat restoration efforts in Louisa County.
