Lansing to purchase
Mt. Hosmer addition

This article was written and posted on INHF's website in May 2002.

The Lansing City Council unanimously approved purchasing a half-acre addition to Mt. Hosmer Park at their regular meeting on May 6.

The Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation (INHF) is purchasing the property from Kim and Debra Voelker at the appraised price of $23,100. The City Council agreed to purchase the land from INHF for $23,100 plus closing costs.

The addition lies on the south edge of Mt. Hosmer Park, adjacent to the park entrance. "Mt. Hosmer is a long-standing local landmark," said Darrel Mills, INHF land conservation specialist. "This addition will ensure the future integrity of the park's entrance."

The parcel overlooks both the city of Lansing and the Mississippi River. It contains timber on steep slopes. The city hopes to build a trail on the addition and existing park.

The city will apply for a state Resource Enhancement and Protection (REAP) grant this summer to reimburse the entire cost. The REAP program helps local governments purchase and improve land for public conservation and recreation. Grants are awarded in October.

The Voelkers had considered marketing the property for development. INHF stepped in to purchase the property for conservation, allowing Lansing time to raise grant funds.
