A Practical Guide to Prairie Reconstruction

by Carl Kurtz

In this practical and beautiful book, noted expert Carl Kurtz outlines the procedures and problems involved in reintroducing tall grass prairie to landscapes large and small.

In chapters on seed selection, soil preparation, seeding, post-planting mowing, burning, and growth and development, the book provides a step-by-step guide to creating a diverse and well-established prairie community--whether it's the backyard or the back forty. It also includes a reference list of Midwest seed sources and services. Meanwhile, Carl's many color photos illustrate both management techniques and the beauty of tallgrass prairie.

The Iowa Chapter of The Nature Conservancy and Leopold Center for Sustainable Agriculture funded publishing this 70-page book. INHF provided production assistance and is funding distribution to all Iowa county conservation boards and soil districts.

The book retails for about $12.95 and is available through most bookstores or by contacting the University of Iowa Press at www.uiowa.edu/~uipress.
