President's Corner
25 events: Savoring the fruits of our labors
by Mark C. Ackelson, INHF president

Note: This article was first published in the Summer 2004 edition of INHF's quarterly magazine.

We've completed more than half of the 25 events that INHF is co-sponsoring for our 25th anniversary.

When we began planning this campaign two years ago, I thought it was a pretty good idea: 25 events at 25 places we helped protect with 25 (and then some) project partners. Now that I've attended several events, I'd say it was a great idea!

First of all, it's been a pleasure for all of us-staff, board, members-to enjoy the fruits of our labors. Sometimes we get so involved in the next task that we forget to savor what we've done: the floodplains that now teem with waterfowl, the hillside that now grows prairie instead of fill dirt, the abandoned rail lines that live again as popular trails.

Second, I'm reminded anew that Iowa's people are as spectacular as our landscape. I've talked with incredible people at each event: long-time INHF members, policy-makers whose decisions helped us get things done, young families savoring a local resource for the first time. They sustain and inspire me.

Third, I've learned (again) why INHF's founders emphasized "building partnerships." I marvel at the care our partners have put into these sites and their obvious enthusiasm in sharing them with others. Besides, they're just nice folks!

Finally, these events have shown me simply that we need events. We need these opportunities to bring Iowa's fantastic natural resources and people together. Come join us at our upcoming events to see for yourself!
