John Craun on the Des Moines River
A volunteer with the Red Rock Lake Association plans to paddle the Des Moines River 400+ miles this spring as a fundraiser for Hickory Ridge Wilderness Camp.

Project News

NEW! Help refine plans for the future restoration of Hickory Ridge Wilderness Camp at Lake Red Rock. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers invites the public to participate in a scoping meeting for the property on March 10, at the Lake Red Rock Visitor's Center, 1105 Hwy T15, Knoxville, from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Download the flyer for additional details, or contact Dorie Bollman with the Corps, 309-794-5590.

NEW! John Craun of Newton, active with the Red Rock Lake Association, plans to "Paddle Across Iowa" to finish raising the last 80,000 to complete the Hickory Ridge Wilderness Camp project on the new Lake Red Rock water trail. John has set himself a challenge to kayak 400+ miles on the Des Moines River. John's tentative start date is April 25, 2010. Read more about John.

To support Paddle Across Iowa (and Hickory Ridge) donate or pledge online or use the print-and-mail pledge form. With your help, Hickory Ridge can be opened to the public in 2010.

Other News

Lake Red Rock has been approved as one of Iowa's newest state water trails. Along with the designation comes grant funding to protect and enhance the future Hickory Ridge Wilderness Camp as a quiet campground for paddlers.

"Central Students at Hickory Ridge" KNIA-KRLS Radio, Knoxville/Pella (Nov. 2, 2009). Volunteers helped at Hickory Ridge Clean-up, Nov. 21.
About 40 friends of the future Hickory Ridge Wilderness Camp turned out on a foggy morning to clear brush and trash. Thanks to all, including the Red Rock Lake Association, Russ Benedict and the Central biology students, Vermeer Corporation and Wayne Van Mersbergen, Pella Boy Scouts and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
