Upper Iowa River Links

Return to INHF's Upper Iowa River main page

www.visitiowa.org
This site is a goldmine of information about the entire northeastern portion of Iowa. There are descriptions and pictures of each of the 6 counties included in the area (Allamakee, Clayton, Howard, Fayette, Buchanan, and Winneshiek), as well as contact information for each county and links to the individual websites. There are separate sections for attractions, recreation, lodging, dining, tours & events, and specialty shops. Pages only list featured business initially, but there numerous others when you search using the pull menus at the top of the pages. You can search all or one of the counties, and by a specific type of lodging, recreation, event, etc. For example, you can find canoeing rental places in Allamakee County if you search on the recreation page and select Allamakee County and canoe/boat rental. The initial results give a brief introduction, and can be clicked on for further descriptions, contact information, addresses and dates.

The Upper Iowa River Watershed Project, through Northeast Iowa Resource Conservation and Development, would like to announce the launching of a new Web site highlighting the Upper Iowa River Watershed. The Web site contains in-depth descriptions of the watershed, detailed water sampling data from 1999 to present, graphs and maps showing water testing results, maps displaying watershed characteristics, a photo tour of the watershed, publications relating to the watershed, links pertaining to the watershed, and a feedback section that allows visitors to provide comments.

www.decorah-iowa.com
Decorah's Chamber of Commerce site has pull-down menus to search for recreation (such as tubing, canoeing, hunting, and camping), lodging, dining, events, tourism (museums and historic sites), and even has a link for city and county maps. There's a section under tourism that gives a brief history of the city. Photos, descriptions, and contact information are also provided. Be sure to check out their section on "outdoor adventures," featuring a drop-down menu of activity choices like canoeing, biking, hunting, fishing and more. Each section links you to local vendors and other information. This site also contains links to all kinds of accomodations (hotels, camping, bed & breakfast).

http://www.winneshiekwild.com
The Winneshiek County Conservation Board's site has information on camping, trails, preserves, historic sites, and parks in the area. There are pictures, descriptions, some history, and contacts given, as well as a PDF map of the Prairie Farmer Recreational Trail.

Iowa Coalition of Off-Road Riders has created a haven site for the adventurous biker. They've done a great job compiling information on difficulty levels, area descriptions, trail maps, facilities and links. Rider feedback on their experiences really adds to the feel you get about each trail. ICORR is a great site for locating trails along the Upper Iowa - and across the state.

http://www.howard-county.com
Howard County's site provides a great look at the Prairie Springs and Prairie Farmer Trails. Lists of information include access points, conveniences, and nearby points of interest. The Parks of Howard County link pulls up a grid showing the various recreational activities and conveniences allowed at each park in the county. And the snowmobiling section includes a list and map of all the trails, as well as important signs to know and a note from the trail sponsors.

http://www.traveliowa.com/
The official Iowa tourism site allows you to search by keyword for recreation, accommodation, events and attractions in any of the 10 designated Iowa travel areas. There's also an extensive list of possible contacts and a section on the history of the state.
