Nature is beautiful. And it's good for you, too! Spending time outdoors can increase the effectiveness of your workout, nurture your spirit and provide new places for your family to play together - it's all up to you.

You can hike, bike or stroll along Iowa's trails, spend time in our many beautiful parks, or glide down a serene river in your kayak. Check out the facts below to discover why you should add a little nature into your life to stay healthy.

Nature makes you happy.
According to a study by California State Parks (PDF), being outside is more than just fun:

  • "Mentally recalling outdoor recreation activities increases positive moods, which are linked to improved self-esteem, [and] lowered depression..."
  • People feel calmer at a park than at home; the longer they stay at a park, the more serene they feel
  • "Participating in wilderness recreation can influence women's everyday lives by leading to increases in self-sufficiency, perspective shifts, connection to others and mental clarity."
  •  "Consistent physical activity increases self-esteem, according to a substantial number of studies."
  • "Nine out of 10 outdoor recreation participants express satisfaction with their personal health and fitness, while six out of 10 who don't participate are unsatisfied with their personal health and fitness."
