INHF projects win REAP grantsThis article first appeared in INHF's Winter 2006 magazine. Though Resource Enhancement and Protection (REAP) funds could not begin to cover all the grant requests for Iowa conservation, the four projects with INHF connections all scored high and received funding. Three INHF projects were among only five of the 20 county-division applicants to receive funding. They include $290,000 for Whitewater Canyon in Dubuque and Jones counties (see pp. 10-13), $200,000 for the Pearey addition to Marietta Sand Prairie in Marshall County and $130,000 for an 80-acre addition to the Iowa River Greenbelt in Hardin County. INHF’s Ventura Cove Project on Clear Lake received $150,000 through the public/private cost-sharing category. “These are the sorts of expensive but important land protection projects that would be impossible to achieve without REAP funding,” said Anita O’Gara, INHF’s vice president. “We’re glad our projects scored so well, but it’s always sad to see other worthy conservation projects just miss the cut. More funding for REAP could be put to very good use across Iowa.” For more information, e-mail Cathy Engstrom, Director of Communications, or call (515) 288-1846. © Copyright
