Gift to Iowa's Future Day 2015: Shuck Gift

Joe and Gerry Shuck increased the protected land around the Iowa Great Lakes through a bargain sale of 40 acres in Dickinson County to Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation. The site will eventually transfer to the Iowa DNR and become part of the Garlock Slough Wildlife Management Area. Almost 10 percent of the water entering West Okoboji Lake flows through Garlock Slough and its network of smaller wetlands. In addition to its water quality benefits, this site is ideal for hunters, bird watchers and nature photographers.

Gift to Iowa's Future

In 2008, Iowa legislators designated the first Monday in April as Gift to Iowa’s Future Day to celebrate and honor individuals, corporations and organizations that have helped permanently protect land for parks, trails, natural areas, fish and wildlife habitats in Iowa.

A number of this year’s honorees worked with the Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation to help them find the right options to protect their land for conservation purposes.
