Loess Hills Winter Workday (Turin)

Join Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation for a winter work day in the Loess Hills. We'll spend a couple hours removing unwanted brush to help the native hill prairie thrive. Please arrive early to park and check-in.

Invasive brush removal involves using various hand tools (loppers and bowsaws) to manually cut unwanted brush.

No experience necessary. Instruction will be provided. All equipment will be provided.

ABOUT THE PROPERTY

This part of INHF's Monona County Complex encompasses approximately 30 acres of Loess Hills prairie and oak woodland and is part of a complex of 675 acres of protected and scenic land in the Loess Hills region. It is located within the Little Sioux South Special Landscape Area and  contains “front facing” Loess Hills topography, scenic vistas, bur oak woodlands and high quality native prairie. INHF purchased the property in 2013 and has owned and stewarded it since. 

ATTIRE & EQUIPMENT
  • Cold weather work attire including hat, work gloves, long pants and layers
  • Sturdy shoes or hiking boots
  • A water bottle

  • No experience necessary. Instruction will be provided.
  • You will be asked to sign a liability waiver
  • No restroom on site
DIRECTIONS & PARKING

The property is about 5 miles south of Turin, Iowa along the Loess Hills Scenic Byway/Larpenteur Memorial Rd. From Turin, head south on Larpenteur Memorial Rd. past the intersection of E54. Continue south until you see INHF signage. The property will be on the left/east side of the road. Parking is available along the east side of Larpenteur Memorial Rd.
