Nature Walk: Leopard Frogs

Small ponds with emergent vegetation, like water lilies, provide good habitats for amphibians like leopard frogs. They are part of the food chain eating a wide variety of aquatic insects, butterflies, worms and even other small frogs or birds given the opportunity. In turn they provide food for fish and large birds such as herons and egrets. These juveniles may be huddled together for protection – many eyes have a better chance of detecting a predator.

It just wouldn’t be summer in Iowa’s wild places without the chorus of frogs in the evening. What sounds define summer for you?
