The Return of Iowa's Bald Eagles; All Rights Reserved Ty Smedes

Ty Smede’s latest book, The Return of Iowa’s Bald Eagles

To celebrate Adult Education and Family Literacy Week, the Des Moines Public Library will host a presentation by Iowa author and photographer Ty Smedes.

The Adult Literacy Center at Drake University will begin the evening with a discussion about the challenges and successes of adults who are learning to read.

Afterward Smedes will talk about his latest book, The Return of Iowa’s Bald Eagles, which documents the success of conservation efforts to reinvigorate the state’s bald eagle population. Smedes’ website states that “in 1977, Iowa recorded its first bald eagle nest in 72 years and, amazingly, just a little more than three decades later, 253 young were reared across 88 counties.” Enjoy incredible photos of these majestic creatures and celebrate Iowa’s achievement in protecting the bald eagle.

Copies of Smedes’ books will be available for purchase at the event. To learn more about this great event, visit the Des Moines Public Library website.

Where: Central Library Meeting Room Wing, 1000 Grand Avenue in Des Moines

When: Monday, Sept. 10 from 6:30-8 p.m.
