Nature Walk: Wilson's Snipe

Sandpipers range across North America and number more than 50 species. They feed in shallow water, from rainwater puddles, along sandbars and in muddy shorelines of lakes and marshes. The Wilson's snipe is one species that pushes the season's limits. It may follow the snow line north in spring and head south just ahead of cold weather. This bird seemed to be undaunted by a fierce north wind and near freezing conditions as it probed the mud of a nearly dry wetland.

While humans might shy away from heading outdoors during the chillier months, these brave birds weather the cold and keep winter birdwatching exciting. Keep your eyes peeled!
