Nature Walk: Frosty Autumn Leaves

Despite frosty temperatures autumn leaves may regain their rich vibrant colors when covered by wet melting snow. As habitat they provide insulation from the cold for over wintering insects, deer mice, voles and shrews. If they form a protective cover over a brush pile woodchucks, opossums and raccoons can also benefit from their cover.

Just because Iowa hadn’t been covered in its usual blanket of snow this December – that is, until last week – doesn’t mean that you can’t enjoy the beauty of the winter season in spirit! Enjoy a frosty moment – from the comfort of your own home – on this morning’s nature walk.
