DIY Prairie Plant Art

Posted on May 24, 2013 at 10:00 AM by Taylor Eisenhauer

Botanical ArtWouldn't it be nice to bring a little bit of nature inside? What if it lasted longer than a few days in a vase?

This quick-do-it yourself project combines a bit of creativity with parts of plants abundant on INHF's project sites for some unique home décor.

What you'll need:

  • A paint canvas
  • Tube(s) of acrylic paint
  • A medium sized paint brush
  • A small, fine paint brush
  • Spray adhesive
  • Can(s) of spray paint
  • Leaves, branches, prairie flower remnant of your choice
  • Plain white paper
  • Paint container/dish

Depending on the size of artwork you'd like to create, you may need to adjust the quantity and size of some materials.

Instructions:

Squeeze out desired amount of paint into a dish or small container. Paint the entire canvas with the acrylic paint from the tube using the larger of the paint brushes. Leave to dry.

Once the canvas is dry, lay the branch or leaves of your choosing on a piece of paper. Lightly cover with spray adhesive. Place the side with adhesive onto the dry canvas and press down so that the edges are secure and paint will not seep underneath.

Spray the entire canvas and plant material with the spray paint. Make sure to stand 1- to 2- feet away so that the paint doesn't drip.

Carefully peel away the plant item. If you'd like you can use the small, fine paint brush to add or smear paint to make your prairie art your own.

Once dry, display your artwork for you and your guests to enjoy!

You can repeat with several canvases, colors and items found in nature if you'd like.
