Nature Walk: Plant Hoppers

Posted on September 16, 2013 at 10:00 AM by Taylor Eisenhauer

Planthoppers belong to the Hemiptera order along with aphids, stinkbugs, leafhoppers and cicadas. They feed on plants but unlike leafhoppers are not usually destructive pests.  Some characteristics of this species are its half an inch size and unique red eye. When disturbed they will immediate hop from their perch as their name implies.

Do you have planthoppers on your plants? Did you know they are not usually destructive unlike some of their insect relatives?
