Nature Walk: Late Evening Anvil

Posted on September 23, 2013 at 10:00 AM by Taylor Eisenhauer

Late evening light on high altitude cloud formations can be warm, soft and dramatic. In this case, a cumulonimbus, or thunderhead, formed an anvil.  At the top are cirrus clouds that are composed of ice crystals that appear to be blowing off. Created by the last direct sunlight of the day, this eye-catching effect of cold blue light near the bottom of the clouds and warm soft light above was a short-lived sight.

Have you seen an anvil cloud before? Did the anvil cloud you saw have such a unique color combination?
