Nature Walk: Pin Oak

Pin oaks are in the red oak family and are often planted in yards. They tend to grow more rapidly than other members of the oak family. However, the preferred habitat in their native range is wet flood plain forests or riparian bottomland. The deep sinuses in the leaves of pin oaks are easy to see, and like northern red oaks they retain their leaves through winter. They shed their leaves in early spring just in time for fox squirrels to utilize them for nesting material.
