Bur Oak stands tall

One of the more magnificent sites in an Iowa winter is a Bur Oak (Quercus macrocarpa) stretching its branches across a chilly and fallow landscape. INHF’s land stewardship staff encountered this towering tree during a brush burn last week at our Gardner property in Boone County. Bur Oaks are one of the most fire-resistent trees and often make up the oak savannas that line grasslands and prairies throughout the Midwest.
