Nature Walk: Common Moss

“Common mosses generally appear as a soft green carpet growing on rotting logs, rocks such as limestone or sandstone, on bare soil and even on the edges of old cedar shingles. Generally the substrate on which they grow is shaded and moist, but some species also colonize sunny dry barren rocks. Mosses do not have flowers or seeds, but produce spores that are carried by the wind. Those pictured here are often found in even the smallest woodland.” -Carl Kurtz
