Building a better future together

In 2010, Iowans aspiring to create a brighter, healthier future came together to support a legacy for Iowa’s water and land. Across the state, Iowans raised their voices and cast their votes for a constitutional amendment that created the Natural Resources and
Outdoor Recreation Trust Fund for the purposes of “protecting and enhancing water quality and natural areas in this state including parks, trails, and fish and wildlife habitat, and conserving agricultural soils in this state.” Together, they passed the Iowa’s Water and Land Legacy, or IWiLL for short, an amendment for the prosperity of Iowans now and into the future.
The Trust Fund has gained staggering endorsement from Iowans — over 70% of Iowans today support funding the Trust.
The Trust Fund embodies values shared across Iowa and would back initiatives that already improve the lives of Iowans with sustainable, reliable funding. Through the Trust Fund Iowans can expect the continued growth of practices and projects that:
- Improve water quality and agricultural soils
- Enhance public health
- Create outdoor recreation opportunities
- Increase economic opportunities and stability
However, for the last 16 years, the Trust Fund has remained empty. To generate revenue for the Trust Fund, Iowa’s legislature must pass a sales tax increase of 3/8ths of one cent.
