Canceled: Into the Wild, Out with the Mustard

RSVP

In light of recent events, this event has been canceled. We are disappointed, but know it is the right decision, and are committed to doing out part to slow the spread of COVID-19. We hope you will be able to join us for future volunteer opportunities. Thank you for your understanding and support of INHF and our public lands.

You're invited to Heritage Valley, a 1,200-acre nature area near Decorah, for the 8th Annual Into the Wild, Out with the Mustard!

Volunteers will hand-pull garlic mustard, one of the most invasive non-native plants in Iowa, from Heritage Valley's woodlands. Garlic mustard spreads rapidly and displaces native plants and wildflowers. If left unchecked, it can do serious damage to wooded landscapes. An RSVP is requested for this event.

Two volunteer shifts are available. Sign up for one or spend the day with us! Rain date: Saturday, May 16. No experience necessary. Families welcome. Coffee, a sack lunch and equipment will be provided.

About Heritage Valley

Folded into the far reaches of northeast Iowa, Heritage Valley lingers in the minds of those who visit. Oak-hickory woodlands cloak secluded hills and bluffs. Bony towers of limestone protrude from vibrant goat prairies on sun-soaked slopes. Three miles of the Upper Iowa River determinedly twists through its 1,182 acres. INHF purchased and permanently protected the property in 2007 and has continued to restore and steward the land ever since.

Please bring:
  • Clothes you don't mind getting beat up, work gloves and sturdy shoes
  • Hat, sunscreen and water bottle
  • All other equipment provided

  • You will be asked to sign a liability waiver
