You're invited to Snyder Heritage Farm for a fall prairie seed harvest for the whole family!
Spend an autumn day learning about the land, exploring the prairie and gathering native seed to support its ongoing restoration. Stay after the harvest to hike around the area's prairie, woodland and oak savanna.
This activity is a favorite among our volunteers, from kids to adults, because of how peaceful and relaxing it is. No experience necessary.
Families are welcome to attend. We'll have fun programming to enjoy while you harvest seeds including a seed scavenger hunt, sensory items and tools like magnifying lenses to help explore the prairie.
In addition, to thank our volunteers for their contributions throughout 2023, volunteers can take home a small bag of seed for their own prairie project.
An RSVP is required.
ABOUT SNYDER HERITAGE FARM
For over 30 years, Snyder Heritage Farm has been slowly transitioning from a traditional farm back to a blend of prairie, oak savanna, woodland and wetland ecosystems. It is now a 154-acre natural area just north of the Des Moines metro. Snyder Heritage Farm is stewarded by Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation.
ATTIRE & EQUIPMENT
- Sturdy shoes or hiking boots, long pants and layers
- Insect repellant and water bottle
- A hiking stick, binoculars, field guide and/or camera, if you like
