Growing up along the high bluffs above the Mississippi River in Burlington, Iowa, Susan’s stomping grounds were ripe with formative nature experiences. Her vantage point atop a gnarly mulberry tree overlooking the enormous expanse of water ignited her curiosity.

“I gazed down and imagined all the places the river had been and would be going, and that someday maybe I’d go to all those places, too,” Shullaw remembers.

Now living in Iowa City following a career in marketing and fundraising communications, nature is a theme still winding through Shullaw’s life. She joined INHF’s board in 2011, serving as board chair and lending her communications lens to further INHF’s mission.

Shullaw finds INHF a great place to share her passion for enhancing the quality of Iowa’s land, water, wildlife and human life. “The board and staff are an incredibly rewarding combination of smart, decent, dedicated, creative, hardworking and fun-loving people.”
