Nature Walk: Killdeer and blue-winged teal

Even though there is good deal known about animal behavior, there are occasions when the actions of a species are mysterious.  The killdeer (in flight) threatening these blue-wing teal is not a predatory bird. However, the reaction of two ducks close to the encounter indicates otherwise.

Why do you think the killdeer is acting uncharacteristically? Is the killdeer defending its territory, or does it have another reason for getting so close to the ducks?
