Nature Walk: Snow Shadows
By Taylor on March 11, 2013 in Blog
The shadow of a stand of trees on freshly fallen snow has no real substance. It is only an obstruction of sunlight by opaque objects. We see it as a contrast of lights and darks, which change gradually as the sun moves. On a white surface, such as snow, the shaded area appears blue due to ambient light coming from a clear blue sky.
The glowing sun against snowy backdrop can sometimes appear as a colorful illusion. Make sure to remember your sunglasses for this morning’s Nature Walk!
